There are numerous destinations in Uganda where you can embark on a trek to encounter chimpanzees. The most sought-after destinations include Kibale Forest and Kyambura Gorge. Kibale Forest is a place brimming with excitement and exploration.

The stunning Kibale Forest National Park in Uganda is a prime destination for witnessing chimpanzees in their wild environment. The park lies approximately 230 km away from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Kibale Forest hosts approximately 1,200 chimps. It is home to 12 other species of primates, including:

red-tailed monkeys, also known as red-tailed guenons
monochrome Colobus monkeys
Uganda red (or ashy) colobus monkeys L’Hoest’s (or mountain) playful primates green vervet monkeys
olive baboons
Uganda mangabeys patas playful primates vibrant blue (or diademed) playful primates grey-cheeked mangabeys
Prince Demidoff’s bushbabies and Bosman’s pottos

The park is a remnant of a vast and vibrant central African rainforest. It spans 776 km along the border of the Queen Elizabeth National Park. It is a rainforest brimming with a multitude of experiences and wonders in Africa. In Kibale, you can find several groups of chimpanzees that are accustomed to human presence, and small groups of up to eight adventurers can embark on a trek to observe them.

Kyambura Gorge

Kyambura Gorge is a stunning ravine located at the boundary of Queen Elizabeth National Park. It boasts a vibrant tropical rainforest, teeming with life, including around 16 chimpanzees. This forest stands apart from the expansive woodlands of Kalinzu and Maramagambo, where other chimpanzees thrive, earning these unique inhabitants the name ‘the lost chimps of Kyambura’.

The forest is stunning and teeming with a variety of bird species and primates, such as red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobuses, baboons, and vervet monkeys.

Be aware that the descent into the gorge is quite steep. And what descends, must also find its way back to the heights! Embarking on a journey to discover the lost chimps of Kyambura is undoubtedly a challenging endeavor, yet it offers immense rewards!

Budungo Forest

One can embark on a trek to encounter chimpanzees in the enchanting Budongo Forest close to Murchison Falls. This stunning rainforest teems with life, including 800 chimps ready to captivate any explorer. It is the vastest untouched tropical forest in East Africa, spanning 825 km. This place is safeguarded by the Jane Goodall Institute, and it is home to several groups of habituated chimpanzees.
