The journey of a gorilla begins with a gestation period lasting around 8.5 weeks.
The gestation period in gorillas is marked by the noticeable swelling of their knuckles. Female mountain gorillas often bring new life into the world under the cover of night, with the timing of their births being as unpredictable as the wild itself, occurring throughout the year.
While trekking through the lush landscapes of Uganda or Rwanda, you will come across gorillas of all ages, from playful youngsters to wise elders.
If luck is on your side, you might just catch a glimpse of a newborn gorilla.
The Journey of the Gorilla Life Cycle
Gorillas experience a remarkably low birth rate, bringing new life into the world every four to six years and having just 1-2 fertile days each month.
After giving birth, they will wait until the baby gorilla reaches 4-6 years of age before mating again. A female gorilla typically brings forth just 2-6 young throughout her life.
When a baby mountain gorilla is born, it’s referred to as an infant and relies on its mother’s milk for nourishment until it reaches 3-4 years of age.
They enter the world at around 4 pounds, facing a myriad of challenges. At just 3-4 months after birth, they begin to sit up and take their first steps.
The mother carries the baby until around 6 months, when the little one can cling to her back, embarking on a journey together until they reach 4-6 years of age.
At times, young male mountain gorillas face peril when the dynamics of their group shift or when their mother decides to join another troop.
This is carried out by a Silverback, driven by the concern that the young males may mature and seize control of dominance. As an infant grows into the age of 4-8 years, they are referred to as juvenile gorillas.
At this stage, they can tackle many activities on their own, but that doesn’t imply they have reached full maturity. During this period, they can tip the scales at 60-70 kilograms.
At the age of 10-15 years, a gorilla reaches adulthood, and males transform into blackbacks.
Females attain sexual maturity at this age, ahead of the males.
Male gorillas will keep growing, while females may cease to gain height and will primarily add weight instead.
As male blackbacks begin to develop a striking patch of grayish hair on their backs, they transform into Silverbacks, signifying the ultimate phase of a gorilla’s life journey.
At this stage, males reach their final size and weight. The typical lifespan of a gorilla ranges from 35 to 40 years.
