Mount Rwenzori

Mount Rwenzori is located in western Uganda on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. 

The mountain is part of Rwenzori Mountains National Park and is the highest mountain in Uganda and the 3rd highest mountain in Africa. The highest peak of Mount Rwenzori is the Margherita Peak at an elevation of 5,109 meters. 

Climbing Mount Rwenzori to get to the Margherita peak takes about 7 to 10 days or more and it requires technical skills and experience due to its steep and rugged terrain. The mountain is known for its ever changing weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and low temperatures. 

It is also referred to as the mountains of the moon due to its snow capped peak. Different routes are used during hikes on Mount Rwenzori and they include the central circuit trail, Kilembe trail and the Bukurungu trail.

Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon is another popular mountain for climbing in Uganda and is located in eastern Uganda on the border with Kenya.

The mountain is an extinct volcano that stands at an elevation of 4,321 meters.  The highest peak of Mount Elgon is the Wagagai peak.

Mount Elgon offers various trekking routes suitable for both experienced climbers and beginners and it takes about 4 days or more to hike to the summit of the mountain and back in the company of the rangers and porters.

The Sasa trail is the one of the routes which are used for hikes on Mount Elgon and is a challenging route. Another hiking route on Mount Elgon is the Piswa trail which is more accessible for beginners. 

Climbing Mount Elgon provides stunning views of its crater lakes, waterfalls, and unique flora and fauna. 

Mount Moroto

Mount Moroto is located in northeastern Uganda in the town of Moroto. It is part of the Karamoja region and offers a less explored and off-the-beaten-path climbing experience during safaris in Uganda. 

The mountain stands at an elevation of 3,083 meters and provides panoramic views of the surrounding plains and valleys. Climbing Mount Moroto allows visitors to also immerse themselves in the local culture and interact with the Karamojong people who inhabit the area.

Climbing Mount Moroto can be a 1 day experience and can also be a 3 days hike. The summit of the mountain is Sokodek. Other peaks of the mountain include Sogolomon at an altitude of 3,027 meters and Imagit or Leoron at an altitude of 2,773 meters.

Mount Sabinyo

Mount Sabinyo is one of the Virunga mountains and is located in Mgahinga national park in south western Uganda.

The mountain is at an altitude of 3,669 meters and is characterized by its rugged terrain and steep slopes. The slopes of Mount Sabinyo are inhabited by mountain gorillas, which are critically endangered and can be found in this region. 

Other primate species that can be found in the area around Mount Sabinyo include golden monkeys and black and white colobus monkeys. The hike on Mount Sabinyo takes about 3 days and can also be done as a 1 day hiking excursion in Uganda. 

Mount Gahinga

Mount Gahinga is one of the six volcanoes that make up the Virunga Mountains and is the smallest among them.

The mountain is also located Mgahinga national park north of Kisoro town. Mount Gahinga is at an altitude of 3,474 meters. The slopes of Mount Gahinga are covered with dense montane forest, which transitions into bamboo forests at higher elevations. Above the bamboo zone, there are open moorlands dominated by grasses and heath plants.

Mount Gahinga also holds cultural significance for the indigenous Batwa people, who are one of the oldest inhabitants of the region. Climbing Mount Gahinga takes about 3 days and can also be done as a 1 day hiking adventure.

Mount Morugole

Mount Morugole is located in north eastern Uganda and is part of the attractions found in Kidepo valley national park.

The mountain is home to the Ik tribe and offers beautiful views of the landscapes of Kidepo national park. Mount Morugole is at an altitude of 2,749 meters and hiking this mountain can be done in a day.

What to pack for mountain climbing in Uganda

Proper preparation for mountain climbing in Uganda is very important for a successful adventure around the different destinations.

Some of the items to pack for mountain climbing in Uganda include clothing, footwear, climbing gear, camping equipment and also safety equipment.

Clothing to pack for the mountain climbing adventure in Uganda includes fleece jackets, waterproof jackets, gloves, hat, long sleeved shirt, and also socks. It is important to layer clothes during the hikes so as to keep warm as a result of the uncertain weather on the mountains.

The type of footwear to pack for the mountain climbing experience includes hiking boots and also gaiters. Personal items to pack for the climbing adventure include sunscreen, food and snacks, water, toiletries, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, wipes, sunglasses, a first aid kit with band aids, bandages, pain relievers and also a backpack.

Camping equipment for mountain climbing in Uganda includes a tent, sleeping bags, stove, utensils and also coolers, camping mattress, camping stove.

Best time for mountain climbing in Uganda

Mountain climbing in Uganda can be done throughout the year, but the best time to climb depends on the mountain and personal preferences of the hiker.

When planning a mountain climbing trip in Uganda, it’s essential to consider factors such as weather conditions, personal fitness levels, and budget for the climb.

The best time to climb the Mountains in Uganda is during the dry seasons, which are from December to February and from June to October. During these months, rainfall is relatively low, and the trails are less muddy and slippery.
