Sector of Nkuringo
The southern region of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, one of the four mountain gorilla habitats in the world, is home to the Nkuringo sector. With approximately 23 habituated gorilla families spread throughout four gorilla zones—Buhoma, Nkuringo, Ruhija, and Rushaga—Bwindi National Park is home to the biggest population of mountain gorillas still living in the wild. Gorillas can be walked in these regions.
Due to its reputation as a world heritage site that protects a variety of mountain gorillas, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the most popular tourist destination for Uganda Safaris. In Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, some gorillas can be observed on the volcano slopes.
The Nkuringo gorilla family, so named because of the rolling hills, is the first spotted family and may be found in the deep, dense forest of Bwindi. In 2004, the Nkuringo gorilla family was introduced to the general public.
There are over 12 members of this gorilla family who have been habituated. Members of this group used to reside in the villages surrounding the park, and park officials had to subject them to habituation training since they were observed destroying people’s crops. They are now completely acclimated, and visitors travel to Bwindi every day on their Gorilla Trekking Safaris.
The Nkuringo family was the only ones living in the area at first. The family was led by Safari and Rafiki the silverback after Nkuringo, the silverback, passed away in 2008. The family became even larger that year when Kwitonda, the twin mother, blessed them with a set of twins, named Muhozi and Katungi. But Katungi passed away before reaching the age of two.

Purchasing a gorilla permit, which costs USD 700 per person per day, is the only method to see mountain gorillas in their native habitat. The gorilla family you will track is not specified, though, during the briefing at the sector’s “UWA trailhead office.” Depending on your physical capabilities, they will place you in one of these gorilla groups. However, because it is easier to follow and more enjoyable, the majority of trekkers who visit the Nkuringo region opt to see the Bushaho family. The family is rewarding because its leader, a silverback named Bahati, enjoys flaunting his menacing chest-thumping manner.
Note: Eight tourists per gorilla family hike with the primates each day. You will be permitted to spend up to an hour on foot, at a distance of 8 to 10 meters, with the gorillas throughout your journey.
In addition to gorilla trekking, the Nkuringo sector offers other breathtaking activities. Additional activities include going on community walks, learning about the daily lives of the locals in the area, enjoying their food and stories, You can talk to the original occupants of these ancient forest caves on the Batwa route and discover more about their distinctive way of life and how they managed to survive there.

It takes more physical fitness and positive energy to track mountain gorillas in Nkuringo because it’s one of the hardest trails in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. However, after this once-in-a-lifetime gorilla experience, one can’t complain about how difficult the trek was.
The ideal time to visit Bwindi National Park in Nkuringo
Although it is possible to go gorilla trekking in the Nkuringo region at any time of year, the ideal time to go is during the dry season, which runs from June to mid-September and December to February.

Because the Nkuringo region has great lodges that range in price from luxury to mid-range to budget, there is no need to worry about where to stay while on a gorilla safari. Accessibility to Bwindi National Park and the Nkuringo region
Road and plane transportation provide easy access to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
It can take eight to nine hours to drive from Kampala or Entebbe to Bwindi, the primary tourist attraction.
As an alternative, you can take a domestic aircraft or charter flight called “Aero Link Uganda,” which is based at Entebbe International Airport and takes you to Kihihi or Kisoro Airport, a nearby rural airport, in “1:15 hours.”
